  It has been five years since I've been to Carson Mental Health but the services I did receive when I was there were high-quality and helped me tremendously at a hard time when I had no health insurance and little money for counseling or medication. It was a process to get in and get established -- you have to first go in and fill out paperwork to determine if you qualify, then I think there's a waiting period for new patients -- but they have individual counseling, medication management (this is where I met my psychiatrist who, luckily also had an office in Reno, so I still see him), and group therapy (this was where I first tried DBT therapy which was really useful to me even though I don't necessarily meet the typical diagnosis for those who used to be referred to DBT groups [this may have changed in recent years as I think it's helpful for lots of people, even just those with depression or anxiety]). Yes, the office seemed a bit run-down (they rely on public funding and it's for low-income and uninsured patients, so they can't afford to be ritzy and cushy like some of the more attractive behavioral health offices in town), and some of the patients I met in the waiting room were clearly struggling with intense issues that I was grateful I myself didn't have (substance addictions, developmental disorders, severe PTSD or schizophrenia, etc.) but you always have the right to just quietly keep to yourself and wait your turn. Caron Tayloe, MFT was my counselor and she gave me hope in a very dark time. In fact, she helped me initiate a huge change (for the better) in my life when I felt I was trapped in a dark place forever and had no way out. Dr. Malinas was also excellent. He was very to-the-point but got the job done. After all, he's a psychiatrist, not a counselor -- it's not his role to talk to you for an hour about all of your emotional issues, he just wants to make sure your medication is working. The DBT group was also pretty good. Sometimes I felt like strangling my fellow group members when they would stop the instruction to ask ridiculous questions or, more often, just tell pointless stories that went on and on (that's what your counseling time is for, ding-dong!), but overall I got some useful information from the lessons. My favorite person was the male nurse who always checked my vitals and took my info before I saw the psychiatrist. I wish I could remember his name. He was so warm, kind and funny, he always made me feel welcome even on my worst days. For low-income and uninsured individuals, this place is a life saver.
